Every chainmaille piece in our shop is built the same way armor was two thousand years ago: one small ring closed through others, by hand, until a flat mesh of metal becomes something flexible enough to wear. That unbroken thread, from battlefield to jewelry box, is a big part of what makes chainmaille special. Here's the short version of a very long story.
First, about the name
"Chainmail" is a slightly modern redundancy. The older word is simply maille (or mail), from the French maille and the Latin macula, a mesh, or the little space in a net. To a historian, "mail" already means armor made of interlinked rings, so "chainmail" more or less says "chain-chain." Most makers happily use every spelling; we favor maille as a nod to the craft's roots.
Ancient origins
Ring armor is genuinely ancient. Its invention is most often credited to the Celts around the 4th–3rd century BCE, with some of the earliest surviving examples found in Celtic burials across central and eastern Europe. The Roman writer Varro attributed mail to the Celts, and Rome, never shy about borrowing a good idea, made it a standard of its army. The Roman lorica hamata, a shirt of thousands of riveted iron rings, protected legionaries and auxiliaries for centuries. It was flexible, repairable, and effective against slashing blows: everything early plate armor wasn't yet ready to be.
The medieval heyday
Mail truly came into its own in medieval Europe. From the early Middle Ages through the 13th century it was the primary armor of the warrior class. A knight's hauberk, a mail shirt sometimes reaching the knees, could be paired with a coif for the head and chausses for the legs. The Bayeux Tapestry, stitched in the 1070s, shows rank upon rank of Norman soldiers in mail: a snapshot of the technology at its peak. A single hauberk might contain tens of thousands of rings and take a skilled armourer weeks or months to complete, which is one reason mail was costly and prized.
How it was made, then and now
The construction has barely changed. Each ring passes through several neighbors; in the most common European weave, every ring links through four others: the "European 4-in-1" that makers still use today. For real armor the rings were riveted or forge-welded shut so they couldn't be pulled apart. And whether a weave sits flat and tight or loose and floppy comes down to one relationship: the ring's inner diameter versus its wire thickness, what modern makers call the aspect ratio. Decline and survival
By the 14th and 15th centuries, plate armor rose to meet crossbows and the first firearms, and mail was demoted to a supporting role: filling the gaps at the armpits, elbows, and groin where solid plates couldn't reach. As guns improved, body armor of every kind faded in Europe. But mail didn't vanish. It stayed in use far longer across the Middle East, Persia, India, and Japan, where ring-and-plate armors were worn into the 18th and even 19th centuries.
Chainmaille today
The rings never really went away. Modern maille turns up in surprising places: the stainless-steel gloves that protect butchers and food workers, the mesh suits divers wear around sharks, and various industrial and protective applications. On screen, hand-linked "armor" has outfitted countless films. And then there's the craft that brought you here: chainmaille as art and jewelry. With anodized aluminum, niobium, and stainless steel, the same weaves that once turned aside a sword now become bracelets, pendants, and earrings: light, colorful, and made to be worn every day.
Two thousand years is a long apprenticeship. When you slip on a handwoven bracelet, you're wearing a technique that outlasted empires, just in a far friendlier form.
